WHEW.
Jon Lester was fantastic tonight – a brilliant outing after the worst of his career last time out. You don’t ever really worry about a guy like Lester, but I’m sure it still felt good for him to get one like that.
Offensively, the Cubs were really ripping the ball again tonight, even if the score and the stats don’t show it. So many hard hit balls that went for outs. Also: Anthony Rizzo homered for his third straight game. Sweet.
Freddie Freeman, who often plays third base now for the Braves, literally saved five runs with two incredible plays at first base in two separate innings with runners on and two outs, against absolute rockets from Kyle Schwarber and Ben Zobrist. That wound up mattering a great deal later in the game.
Things got all kinds of scary in the 9th inning, as the Braves plated two against Wade Davis, and ultimately got the tying run to third base with two outs. The Cubs elected to intentionally walk Matt Adams – putting the winning run on first base – and then Davis walked Sean Rodriguez (albeit on a check swing that sure wasn’t a checked swing (and it looked like it was in the zone in any case), and should have ended the game). Thankfully, Davis got a pop out to end the frame and the game.
As I said: WHEW. Exhale. That’s four straight for the Cubs after the break!
