Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 3, Cardinals 2 – July 22, 2017
The Cubs needed a thrilling win like that! … says a greedy a-hole who has watched the Cubs now win seven of eight since the All-Star break.
In all seriousness, though, consider that the Cubs blew a 3-2 lead yesterday in the 8th inning in spectacular fashion, at home, against the Cardinals. To come back in the 8th inning from a 2-0 hole today against the Cardinals, after Jon Lester’s beautiful outing was momentarily disrupted, and then to walk the tight rope in the 9th and see Wade Davis strike out Yadier Molina to end it? … ooh baby. That was a really good win.
And the Cubs won by the very 3-2 score they couldn’t hold yesterday in the 8th inning. Magic.
As I said, Jon Lester was fantastic through seven innings (he was perfect until an Adam Wainwright single in the 6th), before yielding solo homers to Paul DeJong and Randal Grichuk in the 8th. That stung.
But then the Cubs bats, who weren’t able to do anything against Wainwright and a surprisingly adept Cardinals defense, came alive in the bottom of the 8th, when, with Jon Jay on base, successive hits by Ben Zobrist, Kris Bryant, and Anthony Rizzo gave the Cubs the 3-2 lead.
Davis walked two in the 9th, but ultimately got the Molina whiff to end things. And then I started pumping my fist and shouting ya baby to no one in particular.
