Well, the Cubs weren’t able to extend their winning streak to seven games yesterday, but they’ll get a chance to start a new one today – and they must, less they lose the home series to the Cardinals and risk being swept tomorrow.
Jon Lester is taking the ball for the Cubs today, and he looked really sharp in his last start (7.0 IP, 3H, 1ER, 1BB, 6Ks), though that came just eight days after the worse start of his career (you don’t even want to re-see the numbers). Hopefully, Lester builds off whatever was working for him in his last start and gets the Cubs back on track.
Starting for the Cardinals today is long-time (nominal) staff-leader Adam Wainwright. Wainwright is once again having a rough season (5.08 ERA, 4.05 FIP), and has really never been himself since his ankle injury back in 2015. At 35 years old, Wainwright is getting up there in age, but his velocity drop off has not been steep (he’s essentially lost just half a tick since 2008). Hopefully, the Cubs can get to him early today, and get this series back on track.
Game time at 3:05 CT.
