A very cool announcement from the Cubs, MLB, ABC-7, and Facebook: today’s game against the White Sox, as well as Wednesday’s, will be streamed live at the Cubs’ Facebook page and ABC-7’s Facebook page.
Most notably? There will be no local blackout of these games!
This is a great thing for the local fans who had long since abandoned hope that they’d ever be able to see Cubs games streamed on the web inside the Cubs’ market (even doing so via an authenticated cable subscription that includes CSN just started this year, and is only for half the games).
Not only is it great for them, but it winks at a future where more and more games like this will be made available by way of cooperation between the teams, the league, and the broadcast rights partner. If there’s a way to properly share the revenue and attention generated by the live streaming, then this could be the kind of thing we start seeing more regularly in the future.
If you want to see more things like this in the future, my advice is to tune in at one of those pages to watch the games today and Wednesday. In an ever-shifting landscape where the cable model is constantly imperiled, professional sports experimenting with other delivery options like this is a very big deal, especially when the Cubs are used as a kind of pilot program.
ALSO: For non-local folks, Cubs-Sox is MLB.tv’s Free Game of the Day.
