The Cubs’ Minor Leauge Player and Pitcher of the Month for July have been announced, and and the winners are South Bend outfielder D.J. Wilson and Iowa starter Jen-Ho Tseng.
Wilson hit .260/.349/.507 with four home runs and a steal in July, and that doesn’t count his time spent on rehab with Mesa. He has continued that hot streak into August, and for the second half of the season is now hitting .290/.371/.570. We’ve always known Wilson was a speed guy, but his uptick in power lately has come as a pleasant surprise. If he can sustain it, the combination of speed, power, and excellent defense could move Wilson into the bottom rungs of the Top 100 prospect rankings in a year or so.
Tseng winning this award come as absolutely no surprise. Between Tennessee and Iowa in July, the right hander finished with an ERA of 2.25 and 33 strikeouts over 32 innings across five starts. He walked only seven. With Iowa that ERA drops to 1.42. Tseng had fallen off the prospect radar a bit after his fantastic 2014 season, but his work this summer has definitely corrected that. If the Cubs look to fill a rotation slot from the farm system this winter, Tseng could be the guy they have in mind.
