The Cubs have a really nice opportunity to capitalize on a weak Giants team tonight, before heading out to Arizona to try and beat the Diamondbacks in their own ballpark over the weekend.
Of course, despite the Giants’ struggles, the Cubs will still have to face Matt Moore, who, while struggling this season, did dominate this team in the NLDS last October, as well as Madison Bumgarner, who, while injured earlier this season, has kept a sub 3.00 ERA since returning after the All-Star break. So, you know, maybe just hope they can pull of a series victory as they march into the final weeks of the season.
Speaking of Moore, his latest start was a 5.0 IP, 4ER effort, which featured three walks and five hits (one of which was a homer) against just four strikeouts. His last good start came just after the break, when he allowed just two earned runs against the Indians over 7.0 innings. Moore has allowed two or fewer earned runs just twice in his last 11 tries.
Jake Arrieta is pitching for the Cubs tonight, after tossing a real gem against the Diamondbacks on August 2. In that start, he allowed just one earned run through 7.0 innings, struck out eight batters and walked just two. And with just three total hits on the night, his soft-contact success continued.
The on-paper advantage should fall to the Cubs tonight, but let’s see what they do with it.
