Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 5, Giants 3 – August 7, 2017
These West Coast Games. I made it until the start of the 7th inning before sacking out in service of a passable morning with the kiddos five hours later.
From what I saw, Jake Arrieta looked good once again, pitching with good movement and command. He did give up Ryder Jones’ first career homer on a cutter/slider that caught too much of the plate, but even that pitch was down and had good movement – it didn’t look like one you’d usually expect to see punished.
Offensively, the Cubs got a two-run inside-the-parker from Javy Baez, and scraped together three other runs with timely hitting and great baserunning (though they did go just 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position, so they could have scored plenty more). They even did it despite an 0-5 night from Willson Contreras, which is quite an accomplishment given what he’s done lately.
