Cubs Minor League Daily: The One Who Didn’t Get Away

The Cubs have traded a lot of very good prospects lately, and we’ll probably have plenty of reason to sigh whistfully as we watch some of those prospects do awesome things in other uniforms in the coming seasons. [Brett: EEEELLLLOYYYYYYYY!!!!!!! *sobs*]

But the Cubs haven’t traded all their best prospects. They kept some of them, and the Tennessee Smokies recently put together a highlights package for one of the (former) prospects who most definitely has not gotten away:

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Iowa 2, Colorado Springs 0
When Frankoff avoids the walks, he’s an effective pitcher.

  • Seth Frankoff: 7 IP, 6 H, 2 BB, 7 K
  • Felix Pena: 2 IP, 1 H, 3 K
  • John Andreoli: 1 for 3, BB, 3 SB
  • Mike Freeman: 2 for 4
  • Bijan Rademacher: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Chattanooga 6, Tennessee 3
Vosler has a shot at twenty homer this season.

  • Trevor Clifton: 4.2 IP, 4 R, 8 H, 3 BB, 5 K
  • Preston Morrison: 2.1 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 2 K
  • David Bote: 2 for 5, 2B, 3B
  • Jason Vosler: 2 for 5, 2B, HR
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
    Winston-Salem 4, Myrtle Beach 1
Once again, the Pelicans could not get their offense going.

  • Michael Rucker: 6 IP, 3 R (2 ER), 5 H, 1 BB, 9 K
  • Tommy Thorpe: 2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 K
  • Tyler Alamo: 2 for 4
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 5, Fort Wayne 1
The Cubs’ enjoyed some very good pitching in this one.

  • Erling Moreno: 5 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 8 K
  • Jhon Romero: 2 IP, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Alberto Mineo: 2 for 3, BB
  • Kevonte Mitchell: 3 for 4, 3B
  • Chris Pieters: 2 for 4, SB
  • Tyler Payne: 1 for 4, HR
  • Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
    Eugene 3, Hillsboro 2
    Twelve strikeouts for Emeralds’ pitching.

  • Jose Albertos: 5 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 7 K
  • Keegan Thompson: 2 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 2 K
  • Luis Aquino: 2 IP, 2 H, 3 K
  • Jared Young: 1 for 3, 3B
  • Austin Filiere: 3 for 4, 2B
  • Chris Carrier: 3 for 4
  • Rookie: AZL Cubs
    Cubs 3, Padres 2
This game marked the debut of Estrada.

  • Stephen Ridings: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 4 K
  • Jeremiah Estrada: 1 IP, 1 K
  • Yovanny Cuevas: 1 for 2, 3B, 2 BB
  • Fidel Mejia: 2 for 3
  • Kwang-Min Kwon: 2 for 4, 3B
  • Other Notes

  • He may not be the first name you think of when contemplating September spot starter options, but Seth Frankoff has quietly been having a solid season for Iowa. His groundball rate is excellent (51%.6%), his strikeout rate is very good (9.45 K/9), and batters are hitting just .228 off him. Walks have sometimes been his issue (BB/9 of 3.55 is somewhat high), but in the games where he limits the walks he has done quite well for Iowa. The real problem has been his home run rate. Batters are homering at a pace of 1.45 HR/9. If he can get a handle on that, the Cubs might have a quality back of the rotation option.
  • Vosler hit his 17th homer yesterday. Tennesee has a couple of weeks left in their schedule, so if he picks one homer every three or four days the rest of the season he could hit the 20 home run plateau. He’s already set a new career high. In 2015 he hit ten, but that was for two different teams. His single team high water mark at the start of the season was six.
  • Per the Twitter of an Evansville sports writer, the Cubs have signed left handed pitcher Chris Nunn from the independent Frontier League Evansville Otters. Nunn is a 6’5″ former Padres and Brewers prospect who just joined Evansville earlier this month and was reportedly hitting 98 in his first start.
  • Jeremiah Estrada was drafted in the sixth round in June and signed on the final day to a roughly million dollar bonus. At times he looked like one of the better high school pitchers in the draft, and at times he didn’t. Long term we’ll see how he does, but the potential is here for him to compete for a spot near the top of the prospect rankings one day. He certainly got his professional career off to a good start by working a hitless inning for Mesa.
  • If you are looking for all of the Mid-Season Bleacher Nation Top 40 Prospects List in one place, then look no further. And if you are looking to get caught up on the next wave of prospects coming up, the Top 40 is a pretty good place to start. Just remember that nearly all players with major league experience I graduated from the list (so there will be no Caratini, for example), and most players from the 2017 draft I did not yet add (so no Estrada).

Wake Up and Watch the Cubs Win an Extra-Innings Thriller in Arizona

Although you'd always love to see more offense throughout a game, it's hard to argue with a thrilling, come-from-behind, late-innings, then-extra-innings win. That's what the Chicago Cubs pulled off last night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, with a great performance from...
