Chicago Cubs Lineup: There’s Literally One Right-Handed Batter in the Lineup Tonight

Chicago Cubs

Forgive me for the slightly delayed lineup post. I don’t want to point fingers, especially because it’s all Brett’s fault.

Here’s today’s group:

  1. Jon Jay, CF
  2. Kyle Schwarber, LF
  3. Ben Zobrist, 2B
  4. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  5. Alex Avila, C
  6. Tommy La Stella, 3B
  7. Jason Heyward, RF
  8. Javy Baez, SS
  9. Mike Montgomery, P

As expected and discussed earlier this morning, Kris Bryant is sitting for tonight’s game against the Reds, after taking a pitch off his hand in the ninth inning of yesterday’s contest. Taking his place on the field is left-hander Tommy La Stella, and taking his place in the lineup is Ben Zobrist.

With the righty Asher Wojciecasdalksjfhowski, who has pretty significant lefty/righty splits, on the mound for the Reds tonight an extra lefty doesn’t hurt … but it does make things weird. Trace your finger down the lineup and you’ll find just one right-handed batter, Javy Baez, in the order, and he doesn’t hit until the eighth spot.

That’s pretty crazy to see, but when you realize that Asher has allowed a .409 wOBA against left-handers for his career, you’ll understand why Joe Maddon is going with this group.

As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (6:10 CT).
