Let’s run down the increasingly complicated playoff situations across the farm system, starting with the easy one. Iowa has been elminated. At 65-66 they are mathematically out of it. They could, however, still finish over .500. If memory serves they were thirteen games under .500 at one point this season. Finishing at even or better would be remarkable.
Tennessee cannot win the second half title. That crown probably goes to first half winner Chattanooga, so the real question is where Tennessee stands in the overall standings. Unfortunately, the answer there is “seven games behind Montgomery”. Barring a miracle, Tennessee will not be in the postseason.
Myrtle Beach is already in the playoffs by virtue of winning the first half division title. And that’s good, because they are probably going to finish the second half in last or next to last. They have been playing well lately, though, and anything can happen in the postseason. They could win their third straight Carolina League title.
And then we have South Bend. I thought they were toast a couple weeks ago, but two things have happened to completely change that. First, the Cubs have won nine straight games. Second, Bowling Green (who holds the second playoff slot from the second half right now) has lost seven in a row. All of the sudden the Cubs are two games out of the playoffs, and their final series of the year is in Bowling Green. This race could come down to the wire.
Eugene is in second place in the division, but they are only one game back and they are trailing the team that won the first half. That means, as of today, the Emeralds are in the playoffs. If Hillsboro wins the second half as well as the first, the winner is the second best overall record. The Emeralds lead that race by four games over Boise.
Thanks to a five game winning streak, Arizona is within half a game of first place and a second straight trip to the postseason. Both the Angels and the Giants are ahead of them, though, and they only play five more games. One of those is against the Giants, and two are with the Angels. This race also likely goes down to the final day.
