Cubs Minor League Daily: Watch For Ways To Aid Texas

The hurricane that struck the coast of Texas has caused a mountain of problems, and there are probably more problems coming. That means the various aid agencies are going to need help, and we will have plenty of opportunities to provide that help.

And some of those opportunities will probably come from minor league baseball. It is very common when natural disasters strike for minor league teams, including teams far from the area where the disaster has taken place, to stage special events to help out. Keep an eye out on minor league stadiums near you, and you will probably be able to contribute to some of those efforts.

I suspect some teams will be setting up some memorbilia auctions as well. Those are also common in situations like these, and they are often fairly successful at raising funds. As of my typing this no one has announced anything yet, but once the minor league front offices get to work and can begin planning, I think we’ll see some announcements in short order.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Memphis 4, Iowa 3
This game featured one of the prettiest double plays of the season.

  • Seth Frankoff: 5 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 6 K
  • Pierce Johnson: 2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 1 K
  • Stephen Bruno: 2 for 4
  • Jacob Hannemann: 2 for 4, 2 2B
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Tennessee 4, Birmingham 2
Bloomquist’s Double A career is off to a nice start.

  • Casey Bloomquist: 5 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 1 BB, 4 K
  • Jake Stinnett: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Charcer Burks: 1 for 3, 2 BB, SB
  • David Bote: 1 for 4, HR, BB
  • Yasiel Balaguert: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Erick Castillo: 1 for 4, 2B
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Myrtle Beach 6, Carolina 5 in ten innings.
The Pelicans scored five times in the final three frames.

  • Tom Hatch: 5 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Trent Giambrone: 3 for 5
  • Jesse Hodges: 2 for 5, 3B
  • Tyler Alamo: 2 for 5
  • Robert Garcia: 1 for 3, 2B
  • Connor Myers: 2 for 5, 2B
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
Lake County 9, South Bend 6
    The winning stopped at nine.

  • Tyson Miller: 0.0 IP, 1 R, 1 H
  • Bailey Clark: 4 IP, 7 R (5 ER), 8 H, 4 BB, 5 K
  • Andruw Monasterio: 2 for 4, BB

  • Luis Ayala: 2 for 4
  • Yeiler Peguero: 2 for 3, HR, BB
  • Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
    Everett 3, Eugene 1
The bullpen pitched very well in this one.

  • Rollie Lacy: 4.2 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 2 BB, 4 K
  • Casey Ryan: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 3 K
  • Elvis Diaz: 1 IP, 2 K
  • Austin Filiere: 1 for 2, 2 BB
  • Rookie: AZL Cubs

    Arizona had the day off.

    Other Notes

  • A ball hit up the middle in the first inning against South Bend hit starting pitcher Tyson Miller on the foot. He left the game; there is no futher word on his status.
  • Casey Bloomquist was taken by the Cubs in the 17th round in 2015, and has worked both in relief and out of the pen ever since. His numbers for Myrtle Beach this season are excellent in some area (1.84 BB/9, 49.8% ground ball rate), and less so in others (1.10 HR/9, 6.87 K/9). The 23-year-old right hander made his first Double A appearance yesterday, and so far he’s off to a good start (although the seven hits in five innings is on the high side).
  • If you missed it earlier, the Iowa Cubs put together a very fun video starring catcher Taylor Davis and his stare.
