LOL: Ian Happ Tried to Fake His Way into a Cycle (VIDEO)

Chicago Cubs

Ian Happ had one heckuva night last night.

Starting at second base for the Chicago Cubs, Happ went 3-5 at the plate, with a single, a double, a homer, and four RBI. We’ve already taken a look at how he became the sixth Cub to reach 20 homers this season (a new franchise record) and then celebrated again in a homer party post earlier today. But there’s one more part of Happ’s night that deserves special attention.

As I just mentioned, Happ went 3-5 last night with a single, a double, and a homer. That means that although he was just a triple shy of the cycle, which would’ve been freakin’ awesome, he ultimately came up just short. But it wasn’t for a lack of trying.

Check out what happened when Happ lifted a deep fly ball into the left field corner in the bottom of the sixth inning:

Happ – who, after the game, said he simply didn’t see the umpire make the out call – hustled his way around second and sprinted into third base like he just completed the cycle. He even looks into the dugout, like, “GUYS!, GUYS! Did you see that?” before realizing what happened. Again, LOL. Nice try, dude.

Even funnier, Happ told Sahadev Sharma that John Lackey and Jon Lester, “both told me they’d fight me if I stopped at second,” Happ said. “So I had to get there.” I don’t blame him. Who wants to be on the wrong side of a Lackey and Lester knuckle-sandwich?

So, Happ came up just short of the cycle, but I suspect he’ll have many more chances to go for it again. And, who knows, maybe next time he’ll just try to fake his way into a single? That should be a bit easier to pull off.
