Cubs Minor League Daily: Shaky Defense Leads To Emeralds Loss

Chicago Cubs

The Emeralds lost Game Three of their best of five series to Vancouver 2-1, and they now trail Vancouver in that series two games to one. Vancouver could clinch the Northwest League title tonight.

Once again, defense led to Eugene’s loss. The pitching staff did not allow an earned run. In fact, the pitching only allowed three hits all night. But a pair of Emeralds’ errors led to both Vancouver runs in the fourth, the offense was not able to make up the difference.

The series isn’t over yet, though. Game Four of the series will be tonight, and if Eugene gets another excellent pitching performance they could easily tie this thing up and force a decisive Game Five. Jose Albertos, the best prospect in the farm system, will be taking the mound for Eugene.

Short Season A: Eugene Emeralds
Vancouver 2, Eugene 1
The pitching was excellent.

  • Cory Abbott: 3 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 K
  • Rollie Lacy: 2.2 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Ricky Tyler Thomas: 2.1 IP, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Zach Davis: 2 for 4, 2B, 2 SB
  • Michael Cruz: 2 for 2, 2B, 2 BB

Other Notes

  • Eugene’s one run came in the first, and it was all Zach Davis. He led off the game with a single, and was standing on first with one out. While Austin Filiere was at bat, Davis stole both second and third base. That allowed him to score on a wild pitch one batter later.
  • Eugene’s manager was arrested last Friday night for allegedly driving while intoxicated, but the details of what happened exactly are in dispute. The Emeralds have made a statement, but it may be some time before any more information comes out.
