Pre-Gamin’: Mets at Cubs (7:05 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

Chicago Cubs

Brett, Luis, and I will all be at the game tonight, probably sitting somewhere in the right field bleachers, as usual. So if you are out there and you see us, be sure to say hi.

And if you’re somewhere in the non-bleachers (why?), be sure to say hi to Cubs catcher Willson Contreras, who has officially returned to the starting lineup! But remember, he won’t likely start the full game behind the plate tonight, so don’t freakout if/when he’s taken out around the 4th or 5th inning.

Contreras and the rest of the starting lineup will square up against Robert Gsellman this evening, in what’ll be his 19th start of the season. So far, things haven’t gone well for Gsellman – who’s allowed opposing batters to hit .291/.354/.484 off as a starter this season, while working towards a 5.57 ERA – and we’re hoping that continues tonight. It’s worth pointing out, as Brett did earlier, that Gsellman does not have significant lefty/right splits.

Opposing Gsellman is the Cubs’ lefty Jose Quintana, whom we discussed in the series preview:

Jose Quintana has pitched 6.0 full innings in each of his last two starts, while allowing a combined three earned runs. Better yet, he’s struck out 15 batters during that stretch while walking just 1 and allowing only 10 hits. That’s pretty great.

He had a bit of a bump in the road just before that game (5.0 IP, 6ER against the Phillies), but threw six innings of two-run ball against the Blue Jays in the start before that. That’s a game score of 62 or greater in three of his last four starts, which, yeah, that’s pretty good. Hopefully, he can continue that success tonight and ramp up just in time for the final stretch of the season.

Let’s go Cubs!
