The good news here is that the Cubs won last night, beating the Mets, and thus taking the matter of their previously-frozen magic number into their own hands.
With the win, the Cubs’ magic number to win the NL Central dropped by one, and gave me an opportunity to use the most obvious number 17 out there:

The less good news is that the Brewers and Cardinals both won yesterday, beating the Pirates and Reds, respectively.
The Cubs’ lead in the NL Central thus stays at 2.0 games over the Cardinals, and 2.5 games over the Brewers.
Elsewhere in streaks of note, the Indians won again, their 20th straight, tying the 2002 A’s for the longest streak in AL history, and leaving them just one shy of the MLB mark, set by the 1935 Cubs.
More incredibly, the Dodgers won a game! Finally, they snapped their 11-game losing streak, and it only took a Clayton Kershaw start against a terrible Giants team.
