Chicago Cubs Lineup: Alex Avila Subs in for Willson Contreras, Javy Baez Covers Short

The Cubs and Brewers will play another meaningful game tonight at Miller Park.

Here’s the lineup for that contest:

  1. Jon Jay, CF
  2. Kris Bryant, 3B
  3. Anthony Rizzo, 1B
  4. Ben Zobrist, 2B
  5. Alex Avila, C
  6. Kyle Schwarber, LF
  7. Jason Heyward, RF
  8. Javy Baez, SS
  9. John Lackey, P

With a day game tomorrow (against a lefty, no less), Willson Contreras grabs a seat for tonight’s contest in favor of the left-handed Alex Avila. And that makes even more sense sense today, because while Woodruff hasn’t made a ton of starts this season, in the innings he has pitched, lefties have crushed him (.348 wOBA) far more than righties (.228 wOBA).

On top of Avila, you’ll also find the switch-hitting Ben Zobrist and fellow lefties Jon Jay, Anthony Rizzo, Kyle Schwarber, and Jason Heyward all batting from Woodruff’s weak side. On paper, you have to like this matchup.

The other notable bit for today is that Javy Baez is covering short as Addison Rusell grabs some bench (and, thus, rest). The plan for Russell always included off-days down the stretch, and I believe this is nothing more than that.

As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (6:35 CT).

Cubs vs Astros — Splitting a four-gamer against the current, badly-struggling Miami Marlins is unquestionably a bad outcome, especially when one of those two losses was a win-in-hand that slipped away into the seats. But the typical, and maddeningly correct,...
