The word after last night’s game was good on Javy Baez’s knee. The Cubs’ second baseman/shortstop/utility man/magician fouled one hard off of his right knee late in the game and went down immediately.

Although he stayed in the game and singled, Baez was clearly feeling it as he ran to first, and was subsequently removed.
The good news is that he was pulled so the Cubs could start icing it down and getting him treatment, not because it was necessarily a serious injury (Cubs.com). Fortunately, it looks like it was just a big ole bruise to the quad area (as opposed to a shot straight to the knee), and Baez says he could play today if required (Tribune).
Hopefully he’ll get a day off, not only for this bruise, but also just for general rest down the stretch. The Cubs have several other guys who can fill in at second base, and although the division isn’t clinched just yet, it is all but so.
