Scoreboard Watching: All Sewed Up Before Today Begins

Chicago Cubs

Maybe it’s a false memory, but it feels like there’s always *something* at stake on the final day of the MLB regular season. Often it’s a playoff spot, but sometimes it’s postseason seeding. Something.

Today, the final day of the 2017 regular season … there’s nothing.

Everything that was still on the table was resolved yesterday. The Brewers blew a 6-0 lead to the Cardinals, and thus the Rockies clinched the second NL Wild Card spot. The Red Sox beat the Astros, thus clinching the AL East, and also giving the Indians the top overall seed in the AL.

So today, the only thing left on the table is draft pick positioning for 2018 (and to that end, the Cubs could swing as much as two spots if they win and the Red Sox lose – the Cubs’ recent post-clinch hot streak has already “cost” them two spots in the draft pick order, for what that’s worth).

We’ll have a more comprehensive breakdown of the playoffs tomorrow, so for today, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the last day of regular season baseball for six months …
