Martinez is the “Favorite” for the Nationals Job, Rizzo Humbled, Ricketts Speaks, and Other Bullets

The Little Boy has soccer today, and it looks like he’ll be playing in the snow. I might have to jump in and score a few goals myself just to stay warm.

  • We’re still waiting on a more official confirmation, but if you missed it, Wade Boggs said last night on Twitter that Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez is getting the Nationals manager job. Jamal Collier (Nats beat writer) reports that Martinez is viewed as the “favorite” for the job, though the team has also interviewed former Red Sox manager John Farrell, and will soon interview Mets bench coach Kevin Long. So, either Boggs already knows something that the Nats sure aren’t acting like they’ve decided yet, or he totally misunderstood something and jumped the gun.
  • Another thing from last night: Anthony Rizzo finally won the Roberto Clemente Award for his tremendous service! He was on the field at the World Series and everything to accept the award, so … THE CUBS WERE IN THE WORLD SERIES AGAIN THIS YEAR!
  • Rizzo was thrilled and humbled to win the award (Cubs.com), saying in part, “Baseball is my passion, I love playing baseball and I want to be the best I can be. To be able to reach out and help so many more people on a different level is something I never overlook. Baseball awards are amazing, I work my tail off to be the best I can be, but to be a part of this type of award, I can’t even imagine that …. [Clemente] set the bar for all athletes – especially baseball players – with all of his charitable work and giving back.”
  • In praise of Rizzo, Commissioner Rob Manfred had this to say: “[Rizzo’s] tireless work on behalf of children with cancer. I think probably everyone in this room knows that Anthony is a survivor, himself. Through the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation, there has been great work done. They support children’s cancer centers both in Florida and in Chicago. They have supported oncology life specialists to help young children deal with the aspects of the disease that are beyond the medical and sponsored camps that children with cancer can go to to have a normal summer kind of experience.”
  • There’s so much more here at Cubs.com on what Rizzo has done for those in need.
  • Cubs Owner and Chairman Tom Ricketts sent his annual state of the Cubs:
  • You’ll note at least one substantive update there, as Ricketts confirms that Hotel Zachary – the new hotel across Clark from the Park at Wrigley – will open for guests in “early 2018.” I wonder if their goal is to make that happen in time for the Convention in January. The Convention, itself, will still be downtown, but, hey, maybe some folks would want to stay across from Wrigley and head downtown for the Convention. Eh, that might be pushing it a bit.
  • I like the way Ricketts reframed “wait ’til next year” as a matter of excitement, not a matter of consolation. I’m into that.
  • The move still isn’t official, but it’s clear Jim Hickey is the Cubs’ new pitching coach, and he chose them over many other options:
  • Earlier, we looked at World Series Game Three, and the horrible performance on the field by Yu Darvish, and the remarkably classy performance off the field by Yu Darvish.
  • Fanatics has a one-day, 20% off all orders sale going on right now. Use the code OCTOBER and get your Cubs swag. And Amazon has a very nice Deal of the Day going on today for men’s pants.
  • META: I know that some mobile users have been experiencing pop-ups and redirects to *FAKE* reward or *FAKE* virus sites, and I am very sorry for those of you experiencing it. These come through scumbag advertisers who hide the bad ads, which really hurts both you and us (we need ad revenue to survive – and worse, these scummy ads don’t actually pay us!).

We are working very hard to isolate and remove the bad ads (it’s a bit like whack-a-mole).

In the meantime, you *MAY FIND RELIEF* if you go into your browser settings, and Clear History and Website Data.

Again: I’m very sorry for those of you experiencing this (it really hurts us, too!). Very, very sorry. We’ll keep doing the best we can! THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING!
