A couple quick hits from Chicago Cubs GM Jed Hoyer, in case you were worried (1) that Brandon Morrow was never going to sign, and/or (2) that the Cubs were going to leave the Winter Meetings without making another move.
#Cubs waiting for word on Morrow physical. Hoyer says he anticipates another move before they leave Orlando

Hoyer says he expects Cubs will close a deal for another pitcher before meetings done Thurs (in addition to Morrow)

Given the Cubs’ obvious needs, Hoyer isn’t giving up the goods by admitting anything there, though it’s notable that he said it with such confidence.
My guess, based on the comments, is that the Cubs have an understanding with at least one pitcher about the general parameters of a deal, and both sides know it’s going to happen – they just have to hammer out the final details. Whether that pitcher is a starter like Alex Cobb or one of the many, many relief options available, well, I’d only be guessing. Either way, the Cubs have the need, so it’ll be good to see them get someone else locked down. Before the offseason is over, they’re going to add another starting pitcher and another reliever (at least).
So far, I love both of the Cubs’ pitching additions this offseason. I dig the youth and upside in Tyler Chatwood, and I dig the potential dominance from (and reasonable contract for) Brandon Morrow. Keep it going.
UPDATE: Well, well, well, it seems like Hoyer must have already known the Drew Smyly signing was coming.
