Winter Meetings Weds Night: Davis and Cubs, Arrieta Pricey, Kinsler, Rondon, Cardinals, More

Chicago Cubs

The Winter Meetings extend into tomorrow, with the Rule 5 Draft at 8am CT as the central event. In a typical year, the bulk of the transaction activity takes place in the first three days of the meetings, but, hey, this year hasn’t been typical. So maybe we’ll see more action tomorrow than usual.

In the meantime, here’s what’s going down to wrap up your Wednesday night …

  • Among other comments, Theo Epstein indicated that while Brandon Morrow is currently the best in-house option to close next year, Wade Davis is among “a very small number of potential acquisitions that would cause us to restructure that” (NBC). Clearly, as discussed earlier, the possibility of re-signing Davis is very much on the table for the Cubs.
  • Brandon Morrow is on board:

  • The going rate for pretty much all of the non-closing elite relievers this year has been $8 to $9 million annually:

  • It feels like Davis should therefore be able to get something like a four-year, $40 million deal without issue, even attached to draft pick compensation. Maybe more. Would you want the Cubs re-upping with Davis, 32, on a deal like that? For me, that’s right there on the fence. Davis still had the stuff this past year, and his health was strong, but the command fits give me pause.
  • Indians pitching is popping up in trade rumors beyond just in connection with the Cubs, thanks in large part to their incredible depth. Earlier, we discussed a rumor that had the Cubs talking to the Indians about Danny Salazar.
  • The Nationals are … well, it’s just hard to peg them right now:

  • Another team checking in on Reds outfielders:

  • This is either an indictment of the Red Sox’s farm system or the Marlins’ scouting:

  • Two more teams are in on outgoing Cubs reliever Hector Rondon (earlier, the Astros were connected):

  • Danny Duffy either doesn’t want the Royals to trade him, or he’s big into ‘The Crown’:
