Nationals Sign Howie Kendrick to Two-Year, $7 Million Deal

Chicago Cubs

The progressive thaw of the market continues, now reaching the second tier of free agents.

Although Kendrick, 34, went through a down 2016 with the Dodgers, he rebounded nicely as a complementary piece for the Phillies and Nationals last year. He has shown he can still hit, even if his .315/.368/.475 line last year got a huge boost from a .378 BABIP that he won’t likely repeat in 2018. And he can play second base, the corner infield spots, and the corner infield spots.

In sum, the Nationals got a really nice veteran utility man on a reasonable two-year deal. Good move for the defending lost-to-the-Cubs-in-the-NLDS NL East champions, and you can expect them to do everything possible to solidify themselves to be excellent again in 2018, the final year of team control on Bryce Harper, Daniel Murphy, and Gio Gonzalez.
