After a mind-numbingly long offseason, which saw the Cubs finally sign their big-time free agent starter just days before the beginning of Spring Training … his first start was scratched because of illness.
But here we are another week later, and Darvish is finally set to take the mound for the Cubs – and it’s against his former team, the Los Angeles Dodgers of Los Angeles, to boot! Not bad. Unfortunately, today’s game will not be televised, but you can listen to the start on MLB.com.
But that’s not the only big news of the day, the Cubs lineup is not only loaded with regulars for Darvish’s first start, but Ben Zobrist is making his Spring debut, too. Zobrist had been taking it easy as he nursed some back soreness, but today he’s leading off in front of a full lineup of regulars. Early in the Spring, Maddon mentioned that Zobrist was going to get some looks at the top of the lineup this season, but given his absence form live game action, this might be as much about that as it is about grabbing an extra at-bat before hitting the showers.
Either way, this looks like the sort of lineup you might even see on Opening Day (with Kris Bryant at third and no DH, of course).
Take a look:
- Ben Zobrist, LF
- Kris Bryant, DH
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Willson Contreras, C
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Addison Russell, SS
- Javy Baez, 2B
- Albert Almora Jr., CF
- David Bote, 3B
Pitcher: Yu Darvish
