Pre-Gamin’: Cubs at Brewers (7:10 CT) – Lineups, Broadcast Info, Game Thread

Chicago Cubs

Tonight, the Chicago Cubs are starting their season-series against the Brewers with four straight games in Milwaukee. Obviously, there are still plenty of contests to come after this weekend, but given the way each team has started the season (Brewers hot, Cubs cold), beating them in their home ballpark would feel especially nice.

More immediately, I’d like to see Jon Lester bounce back from an ugly Opening Day start against the Marlins with some quality innings against the Brewers. Unfortunately, as we discussed, he’ll have a tough matchup in Lorenzo Cain, who’s leading off today with a hot bat and strong numbers against lefties for his career.

And then there’s Ryan Braun. Although he may not be the hitter he was when he was younger, he still performs much better against lefties, including a 117 wRC+ last season. Lester will have his work cut out for him, but I think he can get it done.

Starting opposite Lester, is the Brewers lefty Brent Suter. Suter, now 28, made 14 solid starts for the Crew last year, earning a 3.42 ERA (3.75 FIP) and 1.6 WAR in just 81.2 IP.

His first start of this season came against the Padres, and was neither terrible, nor spectacular. He lasted only five innings and allowed three earned runs (including a homer), but struck out four batters and walked just one. He also did a nice job of limiting hard contact and even managed to induce a 25.0% infield fly-ball rate. He’s a capable starter, so the Cubs’ bats need to be ready.

For what it’s worth, Suter does have a traditional lefty/right splits, but so far (throughout his career), it hasn’t been very pronounced (.301 wOBA v. lefties, .318 wOBA v. righties). Let’s see if the Cubs hitters can help him with that.
