It is hard to not get too excited by early season performances, but the three scoreless innings Bailey Clark turned in yesterday deserves some attention. Clark has some great stuff, but last season his control was a mess and his walk rate left him constantly in trouble. Yesterday was his second appearance in 2018, and it is now his first appearance without giving up a walk since 2016. Clark refining his control would be a potentially big story this year, if it continues to play out that way.
But we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. My rule of thumb for starting to take certain rate stats seriously is 100 PA for batters, and about 30 innings for pitchers. We are a long way away from those targets right now.
