Cubs Minor League Daily: Tyler Thomas Dominates For South Bend

Myrtle Beach can’t catch a break. Twice this season they have been shut out and in every other game they have scored no more than four runs. So when their offense exploded for fourteen runs last night, it had to mean they got their second win of the season, right? Nope.

Meanwhile, South Bend is off and running. They turned five no hit innings from Tyler Thomas into a three hit shoutout on their way to their fifth win of the year.

Thomas was the Cubs’ seventh round pick last June (when he was generally known as Ricky Tyler Thomas), and he pitched well in 19 innings of relief for Eugene. Through his first 10 innings in 2018 he has now allowed one earned run, walked one, and struck out ten. I would go ahead and consider his next start a must-watch.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Iowa 6, Nashville 3 in eleven innings
The Cubs were efficient, scoring six times on just four hits.

  • Michael Roth: 6 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K
  • Justin Hancock: 1.1 IP, 4 K
  • Mark Zagunis: 0 for 2, 3 BB
  • Chris Gimenez: 1 for 4, 2B, BB
  • Taylor Davis: 0 for 2, 2 BB
  • David Bote: 2 for 4, 2B, BB
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Jackson 4, Tennessee 3
The Smokies rallied to tie the game in seventh, but Jackson scored once more in the ninth.

  • Duncan Robinson: 6 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 5 H, 2 BB, 4 K
  • Zack Short: 0 for 3, 2 BB
  • Jason Vosler: 1 for 4, BB
  • Jeffrey Baez: 1 for 1, 2B
  • Duncan Robinson: 1 for 1, BB
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Down East 16, Myrtle Beach 14
The wind was blowing straight out at 15 MPH. That probably helps explain the 30 total runs and 33 hits.

  • Jose Paulino: 3.1 IP, 6 R (4 ER), 5 H, 5 BB, 6 K
  • Andruw Monasterio: 3 for 6, 2B, BB
  • P.J. Higgins: 2 for 5, HR, BB
  • Vimael Machin: 2 for 4, 2B, BB
  • Jhonny Pereda: 2 for 6
  • Chris Pieters: 1 for 5, 2B
  • Daniel Spingola: 1 for 4, 2B, 2 BB
  • Austin Upshaw: 1 for 5, BB
  • Connor Myers: 2 for 5, 2B, SB
  • Aramis Ademan: 3 for 6, 2B
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
South Bend 5, Bowling Green 0
That’s an emphatic way to cap off a series sweep.

  • Tyler Thomas: 5 IP, 7 K
  • Enrique De Los Rios: 4 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 2 K
  • Chris Singleton: 2 for 5, 2B
  • Austin Filiere: 2 for 4, 2B, BB
  • Tyler Payne: 3 for 5
  • Miguel Amaya: 2 for 3, 2B, BB
  • Rafael Narea: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Other Notes

  • Altogether, Iowa walked ten times in their win, and capitalized on a Nashville error as well.
  • Here’s something you don’t see everyday: Duncan Robinson, the Tennessee starting pitcher, has a two game hitting streak going. He also has a walk and a run batted in.
  • Every batter in the Pelicans’ lineup reached base at least twice, except for Pieters.
  • The Cubs are very disciplined in the farm system when it comes to pitch counts, inning limits, and carefully managing the workload on their young arms to avoid higher risk of injury. Thomas had a no-hitter going when he left after five, and his pitch count was only 65. I think in a lot of other systems he may have been sent back out for at least the sixth because of that no-hitter despite his pre-set limits. Not the Cubs. And I think that is a very good thing.
