Chicago Cubs Lineup: The Last One Before Anthony Rizzo Returns?

Chicago Cubs

After coming back BIG TIME yesterday (how fun was that?!), the Chicago Cubs have a chance to win their series against the Braves. Here’s the group that’ll try.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

  1. Ben Zobrist, RF
  2. Tommy La Stella, 3B
  3. Kris Bryant, 1B
  4. Kyle Schwarber, LF
  5. Victor Caratini, C
  6. Javy Baez, 2B
  7. Addison Russell, SS
  8. Jason Heyward, CF
  9. Tyler Chatwood, P

Alright, there’s obviously a lot to unpack here, so let’s just get down to it. With Anthony Rizzo still on the disabled list (he’s eligible to come off tomorrow (and has been taking grounders and hitting in the cages all week)), Kris Bryant is the lucky man to cover first base today.

But despite Bryant’s offensive prowess and general defensive versatility, I can’t say he’s been my favorite fill-in defensive first baseman. I noticed at least a couple of flinches/missed balls the other day that Rizzo would’ve certainly caught, and, well, I just can’t wait till he’s back.

With Bryant at first base, Tommy La Stella gets another crack at starting (playing third), and he certainly earned it yesterday after going 1-1 with a walk after coming in as a pinch hitter yesterday. Plus, with the righty, Julio Teheran, on the mound for the Braves this afternoon (he has SIGNIFICANT lefty/righty splits for his career), I’m glad the Cubs found a way to get in an all left-handed hitting outfield (Jason Heyward in center, Ben Zobrist and Kyle Schwarber in the corners) and playing time for La Stella.

In other notable news, Victor Caratini is giving Willson Contreras a break behind the plate, and Zobrist is the leadoff man. So many moving parts in this one. Let’s see if it can give the Cubs the edge in the series.

As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ closer to game time (1:20 CT).
