Big Cubs Were Postponed, So the Iowa Cubs Filled in with the Homer Party (VIDEOS)

Chicago Cubs

No Cubs yesterday thanks to the terrible early-season weather (and today’s game is probably in peril, as well), so the Iowa Cubs had to do their part to fill in to sate our need for DINGERS.

The I-Cubs won yesterday’s game 9-4 thanks in large part to a trio of homers that the team Twitter account just shared:

Each of Bote, Zagunis, and Court has a chance to see big league time this year. The first two are already on the 40-man roster, and with Court, who is versatile and had a strong spring, the Cubs could always add him if they wanted to call him up.

Bote, 25, broke out as a legitimate utility prospect last year with a big season at AA Tennessee, and he’s smoking the ball again here in the early going – that was already his third homer of the year in just eight games. Until the other two homers in the game, Bote was the only I-Cub to homer yet this season.

Zagunis, 25, saw a little bit of big league time last year as a fourth outfielder, and that figures to be his long-term path to the big leagues. He is mostly a corner outfield guy, so he’s going to need the bat to really show up in order to carve out regular playing time. He showed he can handle AAA pitching last year (.267/.404/.455, 17.2% BB rate, 22.8% K rate) but there may need to be just a little more power in his game for the overall skill set to play in the big leagues.

Court, 29, is not a traditional prospect, having joined the Cubs on a minor league deal this offseason after spending time in the Diamondbacks and then Red Sox systems. He hasn’t yet seen big league action, and isn’t off to a hot start at the plate at Iowa (.167/.286/.333, 42.9% K rate).
