For the second time in as many days, the Chicago Cubs’ game at Wrigley Field has been postponed. That, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers (note, tonight was supposed to be an ESPN game), though there has not yet been an official announcement.
Tonight was set to be the start of a three-game series against the Cardinals, a day after the Braves and Cubs could not complete their series thanks to atrocious weather. The forecast ain’t great for the rest of this series, by the way, so we’ll see what happens.
With an off-day already imposed upon them yesterday, Cubs players are getting an extra two days of rest, which is not a bad thing, but also not the best use of those freebie off-days this early in the season. Will the Cubs now opt to skip someone in the rotation, or will they just bump everyone back yet another day, which will mean that guys will have a week between starts? I tend to think that’s the route they go, given that it’s so early in the year, and the Cubs wanted to limit the starters’ use at this stage anyway.
As for a makeup, that may accompany the official announcement on the postponement later today (SEE UPDATE BELOW). Both teams have an off-day on Thursday and then a night game on Friday, so logistically, having the makeup right then could make sense, even if it would make for a rough travel day.
The Cubs already have two makeups on the schedule, and more are on the way. Good thing they have a sixth starter and lots of arms ready to ride the shuttle from Iowa.
UPDATE: It’ll be a summer doubleheader:

So that’s doubleheader number two on the schedule for the Cubs, who are already set to make up one of their rainouts on May 19 with a doubleheader in Cincinnati.
