Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 8, Cardinals 5 – April 19, 2018

Chicago Cubs

Were you judging solely by the top of the first inning, you’d think it was going to be another one of those days. The Cubs handed the Cardinals their first run on a hit by pitch, a throwing error on steal, a throw away on a sure double play, and then a wild pitch. Runs don’t get more ugly than that.

But then a magical thing happened – the Cubs immediately responded in the bottom of the first not only by scoring a man from third with fewer than two outs (a Javy Baez triple then a Kris Bryant single), but also by notching a two-out hit with a runner in scoring position!

It actually carried on from there, with the Cubs plating six on starter Luke Weaver thanks to a parade of timely hits, many to the opposite field. And then Jason Heyward hit a bomb off the first reliever to enter. Every Cubs starter had at least one hit in the game.

Yes, there was a big fat hiccup in the 7th inning when Eddie Butler couldn’t mop up as intended, but Steve Cishek, Carl Edwards Jr., and Brandon Morrow got the final nine outs to preserve the win.

A win that was set up by a great performance by Jon Lester:
