The Cubs have a chance to escape Colorado (Starring Kurt Russell!) with a series win this afternoon. Let’s see if they can pull it off.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Albert Almora Jr., CF
- Javy Baez, SS
- Kris Bryant, 3B
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Tommy La Stella, 2B
- Kyle Schwarber, LF
- Victor Caratini, C
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Jose Quintana, P
Somehow, the Cubs are facing YET ANOTHER reverse-split right-hander this afternoon in German Marquez. But after the Almora-Baez-Bryant trio at the top, the Cubs follow with six straight lefties. Notable righties riding the pine today are Addison Russell and Willson Contreras.
Now, for the eye-popping splits.
Career Splits:
Versus Lefties: .318 wOBA
Versus Righties: .369 wOBA
2018 Splits:
Versus Lefties: .186 wOBA
Versus Righties: .492 wOBA
Fortunately, that’s pretty good news for the top of the order. Now, Joe Maddon doesn’t have to think twice about leading off with Albert Almora again, who’s been great not only against right-handers this season (.320/.346/.400) but also in the leadoff role (.419/.471/.548).
It also means more Javy Baez in the two-hole, which is quickly becoming a fan favorite move. It’s crazy to think the Cubs can afford to bat a lefty like Schwarber with a .278/.400/.556 slash line sixth … but it also makes sense. I know the offense has been uneven at times this season, but it’s just so hard for me not to see the obvious reasons to be excited.
As usual, we’ll have your full Pre-gamin’ closer to game time.
