While Iowa is tied for the fewest wins in the Pacific Coast League at 4-10, all their rain and snow postponements means that two other teams have a worse winning percentage than Iowa’s .286. So far as their division is concerned, though, they’re already seven and a half back of Oklahoma City.
Last week the Smokies struggled to win one game against league-leading Jackson. This week they looked awesome winning four of five over basement dweller Montgomery. As a result, the Smokies are back over .500 at 8-7 and are sitting in third place, five games back of Jackson. They also are in a series against the other league basement dweller (Jacksonville), so by this time next week they could be the first Cubs’ affiliate to double digit wins and might just be in possession of second place.
Despite having the worst record in the league at 5-12, the Pelicans are only six games out of first place. They also have a two game winning streak going, and have been getting some good pitching lately. Given that pitching, I wouldn’t rule out Myrtle Beach making a first half title run, but I wouldn’t bank on it either.
This time last week South Bend was sitting in first place and playing about as well as any team in the league. Then they lost four straight games, fell into fourth place and are now trailing West Michigan by three games. Road games have been a problem so far for the Cubs – they only have one win in six tries, but at least for today they are home. They head to Bowling Green on Monday, though.
