Enhanced Box Score: Cubs 9, Rockies 7 – April 22, 2018

Most games at Coors Field, by its very nature, are a little bit crazy. But today was outrageous.

First, Kris Bryant gets drilled in the head and has to leave the game in the top of the first (after two Cubs coaches were ejected). Then the Cubs go hit crazy and plate three runs with two outs. They build that lead to 6-0, which including a Javy Baez home run, naturally. Albert Almora made a couple insane catches. Things looked rosy.

But then Jason Heyward lost a battle with the sun, and the Rockies plated two on a “triple.” Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado went back-to-back. The lead was just 6-4.

But then the Rockies screwed up a bunt, and Javy Baez did what he does, and the Cubs built back up a 9-4 lead. And then the Rockies immediately got three back, two of which came on a grounder off of Carl Edwards Jr., on which he nearly made a spectacular play, but threw the ball away. Oh, and a fan ran onto the field in there somewhere. It was all just so odd. I’m sure I’m missing something.

Oh, and tense. It was extremely tense. Especially the 9th inning.

In the 9th, Blackmon crushed one to center, and Almora made a third insane catch. Then Arenado singled to right. Then Trevor Story dribbled a hit to third. And then Brandon Morrow walked David Dahl to load the bases and put the winning run on first base. And then a wild pitch appeared to score Arenado to bring the game to 9-8.

except the play was reviewed, and the call was overturned. Arenado was out on a nice play by Willson Contreras and by Morrow. The game was over. Holy crap that was ridiculous.

So much more to discuss from this one, including Jose Quintana’s performance (which was better than his line looks). But for now, I’m just happy it’s over and in the ‘W’ column.

Full box score.
