I’m going to miss most of today’s game at my wedding shower, but I should come home with some sweet pots and pans and knives and towels and stuff, so it’s a fair trade. Hopefully, the Cubs can bring a win home, too.
I’m guessing that’ll depend primarily on Jose Quintana, though, who’s not off to a great start this season. Through his first three games, Quintana has just one appearance he’d like to remember (start #2 against the Brewers), because he allowed 6 earned runs in 6.0 innings in his 2018 debut against the Marlins and 7 earned runs in just 2.1 innings against the Braves at Wrigley more recently (in some of the worst baseball conditions ever).
Walks have been a bit of an issue for the Cubs lefty, as has hard contact. He is generating a ton of ground balls (53.3%) though, and isn’t letting anything up in the air (26.7%), so he’s got that going for him. But, yeah, everything else has been rough.
Starting opposite Quintana is German Marquez – a very beatable righty with fairly reverse splits (as we explored in the lineup post). But despite being beatable, that doesn’t mean Marquez doesn’t have his moments. Five days ago, he started against the Pirates and surrendered just 2 earned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks against 6 strikeouts over 6.0 innings. That’s not a bad performance against a team that’s been clicking, so be prepared, as always, to be frustrated.
But also … come on, Cubs. You can beat this guy. Give us that series win. We all need it.
