After a game that was so bonkers throughout, it was only fitting that it ended on another crazy play: a “walk-off” wild pitch … but not the kind you’d expect.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Brandon Morrow tried to snap off a third straight slider to strike out Ian Desmond and end the game. But he snapped too hard and wound up spiking the pitch, giving Willson Contreras no real chance to block it. But the backstop at Coors Field is very close, and Contreras made a great play to get the ball to Morrow quickly, who applied the tag.
Arenado was initially called safe, but the replays were clear. Dude was out, and Cubs win:
.@Cubs challenge call that Nolan Arenado is safe at HP in the 9th; call overturned, runner is out.
