Cubs Minor League Daily: Stephen Bruno Makes Like Albert Almora

Stephen Bruno is an infielder. In his career, which goes back to 2012, he’s played just over 30 games in the outfield.

Keep that in mind you when you watch his catch against Memphis yesterday.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs
Memphis 8, Iowa 6 in 12 innings
Iowa rallied in the bottom of the ninth, tenth, and eleventh to keep the game alive.

  • Jen-Ho Tseng: 5 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 3 K
  • Anthony Bass: 2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 3 K
  • Justin Hancock: 1 IP, 2 K
  • Dillon Maples: 1 IP, 2 K
  • Mike Freeman: 2 for 6
  • Stephen Bruno: 3 for 5, 2B
  • Efren Navarro: 2 for 4, BB
  • Wynton Bernard: 2 for 5, 3B
  • Bijan Rademacher: 1 for 4, HR
  • Double A: Tennessee Smokies
    Jacksonville 11, Tennessee 5
Tennessee fell behind early and never really got back into this one.

  • Duncan Robinson: 4 IP, 7 R, 8 H, 4 K
  • Daury Torrez: 3 IP, 3 H, 3 K
  • Trey Martin: 3 for 3, 2B, BB
  • Jesse Hodges: 2 for 4
  • Jeffrey Baez: 3 for 4, 2 2B, HR, SB
  • High A: Myrtle Beach Pelicans
Myrtle Beach 8, Down East 3
The Pelicans scored early, and solid pitching took care of it from there.

  • Matt Swarmer: 6 IP, 4 H, 7 K
  • Jordan Minch: 2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 5 K
  • D.J. Wilson: 2 for 4, 2B, BB
  • P.J. Higgins: 2 for 4
  • Jhonny Pereda: 2 for 4
  • Wladimir Galindo: 2 for 4
  • Andruw Monasterio: 1 for 4, 2B
  • Aramais Ademan: 2 for 4
  • Low A: South Bend Cubs
    Lansing 4, South Bend 2
On the good side, the bullpen was excellent in this one.

  • Brendon Little: 4.2 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 2 BB, 4 K
  • Rollie Lacy: 3.1 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K
  • Ben Hecht: 1 IP, 2 K
  • Yeiler Peguero: 2 for 4
  • Miguel Amaya: 2 for 4
  • Rafael Narea: 2 for 4, 2B
  • Other Notes

  • It looks like there won’t be a round of roster shuffle dominoes this time. Iowa filled the roster spot created by the promotion of David Bote when they returned Bijan Rademacher from the disabled list yesterday.
  • Add Matt Swarmer to the list of Cubs’ pitching prospects doing well this year. A 19th round pick in 2016, the right hander shot up to Tennessee for a few games last season. This year he has struck out 21 in his first 15.2 innings for Myrtle Beach while posting an ERA of 1.72.
  • There is a part of me that hates this time of year. Baseball is back and that means stats are rolling in, but I can’t really use them yet. The sample sizes are all too small. But that’s fine. I can be patient. It’s not like I’m refreshing stat pages every six seconds to see if anyone has reached 100 PA yet. Not me. Nope. Doing perfectly normal things over here. How’s your day?

Blue Jays Land Jeff Hoffman on a Three-Year Deal
