Another Cubs Win and It’s Been Quite a Good Stretch, Bullpen Dominance, and Other Bullets
Three kiddo soccer games today. Gimme that coffee, please and thanks.
- The Cubs are now three games over .500 for the first time this season, and, with three games left in April, that means they’ll finish this opening month no worse than .500. Don’t get me wrong, .500 would be disappointing, but given how it has felt much worse than that at times, I don’t think it would be so bad. Win two of these final three games, though, and the Cubs are four over for the month. That’d be just peachy.
- The Cubs have also kinda quietly won six of their last eight. Even if they lose today, that’s still six of nine. That’s quite a nice stretch, especially when you consider the second half of it has been Kris-Bryant-less. Hopefully that part – but not the winning – changes this weekend.
- Each of Albert Almora and Javy Baez extended their hitting streaks to 10 games yesterday. And with another (SERIOUSLY, ANOTHER!) reverse-split righty on the mound today in Junior Guerra, they figure to get a chance to make it 11 games, returning to the top of the lineup today.
- What a beautiful shot from one of the newly-located camera wells next to the dugouts at Wrigley:
- You weren’t imagining things yesterday or just being an over-reactionary fan. The strike zone really was that bad:
- There’s really not a lot of coherence there, and some of the balls are just flat out right in the dang middle of the zone.
- Cubs noting just how ridiculous Carl Edwards Jr. has been to start this season:

- He’s rocking a stupid 42.9% strikeout rate and an even more unbelievable (for him) 8.2% walk rate. That’s tip-top-elite-tier results, and it’s coming from a guy who also gets a ridiculous amount of soft contact and gives up very little hard contact.
- And he’s not alone in Cubs bullpen dominance:

Weird, intriguing, small sample data point: presently, 5(!) of the top 14 NL relievers at limiting hard contact are Cubs. pic.twitter.com/ZN87LSBSm3

- Javy had some fun yesterday:

- A couple miscellaneous GIFs/points:
Brandon Morrow striking out Ryan Braun with 99 at his eyeballs to end the game is something I cannot watch enough. pic.twitter.com/Ku04LLmE4s

Something subtle I didn't appreciate enough about Almora's catch the other night until this GIF: note how he extends to catch while also starting to position his body to brace for impact with the wall. You want a guy to go all out … but you also want him to protect himself. pic.twitter.com/PmLzDelIaG

- Day Two of the NFL Draft went off last night, and the Bears are getting a lot of love for their picks (yes, multiple, as they made a trade):
