A new day, a new opponent, same low-scoring close win.
The Cubs once again did just enough to pull the win out, with a decent start, great defense (well, with the exception of Javy Baez, of all players), and a flawless bullpen.
That last one featured Luke Farrell getting his first non-mop-up work, and he looked good. The converted starter may very well be a thing as a reliever. I’m glad to see him get a real shot.
And speaking of the bullpen, it was going without Carl Edwards, Jr. and Brandon Morrow at the back end, seeing as they’d closed down three of the past four wins. Instead, Pedro Strop, Brian Duensing, and Steve Cishek took their turn. Must be nice to a deep well like that, eh? Wait. Yes. It is nice.
The Cubs got their runs without the benefit of the long ball on a night with the wind howling out, and the Rockies got theirs after an untimely error by Javy Baez where he simply dropped a throw. (It happened in the 5th inning, naturally.) Jon Lester did the best he could to pitch around it, but sometimes Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado are gonna get theirs.
The lead run came as Anthony Rizzo scored Kris Bryant, who had tripled. So that was nice to see.
Together with a Pirates loss tonight …
