Although he gave up a couple hits and a walk in the first inning, Jose Quintana did not allow a runner to score thanks primarily to his defense.
Enter Kyle Schwarber’s fantastic arm in left field – say what you will about the rest of this defense, but you can’t question the arm – gunning one hard to the plate to cut down Matt Carpenter:

The accuracy was not perfect, but that’s a very good, strong, level throw to the plate that gives the catcher a chance. And, since that catcher is Willson Contreras, he’s going to make a great tag – which he did, and Carpenter was toast.
Someone should let St. Louis know about Schwarber:
That’s the best throw Kyle Schwarber will likely make all year. It’s hard to blame Oquendo for sending Carpenter, who hustled all the way to the best of his ability. He’s not fast, and he did as ordered, but that was a huge out. #STLCards #Cubs
