Ah, the trusty Reds. Coming along just when the Cubs need them.
Although they could have scored a whole lot more, the Cubs settled for 8 runs tonight on the strength of 15 hits and 8 walks. The Cubs were just 4 for 19 with runners in scoring position, but good gravy, at least that’s a ton of chances.
Addison Russell had four hits, and each of Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, and Willson Contreras had multiple hits, as well.
On the pitching side, Jon Lester was fantastic, hitting his spots beautifully, and allowing bupkis through six innings. From there, Justin Wilson had a three strikeout inning, Justin Hancock had a two strikeout inning, and Mike Montgomery had a two strikeout inning.
It was all Cubs in this one, no matter how to size it up. Thank you to the rain for just barely allowing this one to be played, and thanks to the old faithful …
