It’s fair to say that, so far this year, Javy Baez hasn’t quite been himself in the field. He’s still been quite good, don’t get me wrong, but he’s also made an unusual volume of mistakes, and maybe not quite as many absurd plays as we’re used to seeing from El Mago.
But man alive did he just pull one off on a Joey Votto grounder up the middle:

I mean, that’s just freaking crazy. The physical talent to pull it off, the mental awareness to make the play in that way, and the arm strength to finish off the throw? Javy Baez is just so special out there.
If that ball goes through to Zobrist, or if Baez waits for Zobrist to cover the bag, the Cubs get – at most – one out there at second base. That was the only way a double play was possible … and it didn’t even look possible.
Javy bein’ Javy. He also hit a moonshot earlier in the game.
