WATCH: Ian Happ’s Monster Pinch-Hit Homer Hit the Right Field Video Board

Chicago Cubs

It didn’t quite complete the comeback last night, but Ian Happ’s 9th inning home run did put the Cubs on the board.

And, also, he put it on the board. The video board.

For the first time since Anthony Rizzo did it a couple years ago against the Cardinals (how has it been that long with this much power in the lineup?), a Cubs batter hit the right field video board at Wrigley Field. And since Happ did it in the 9th inning of a 10-1 blowout, it probably won’t be remembered for its awesomeness, but I thought it at least worth spotlighting this morning.

Lift-off:

That shot was 433 feet and off the video board, having been crushed at 107.6 mph.

The homer pushed Happ’s resurgent line up to .261/.366/.539 with a 138 wRC+, which is now second best on the Cubs, behind only Kris Bryant. It’s also 17th best in the National League.

Once that strikeout rate gets down into the low 30s%, I’ll start thinking about this performance being sustainable for Happ. Yes, he hits the ball exceptionally hard and runs quite well, but a .415 BABIP just ain’t gonna hang around forever. And when that turns, if the strikeout rate is still 40%, even if he takes his walks and hits for power, the overall line is going to be sub-average.
