You can never count on a sweep, much less a four-game sweep, but the Cubs did have a very good match-up in this series all along. They were catching an injured, downtrodden Mets team at their low point. Good teams take care of business in those situations, and the Cubs certainly did.
Some of the games were lose-able, of course, and that includes today. But the pitching was so very good, the defense sharp, and the baserunning impeccable. Even when the bats aren’t blasting the ball, that can be enough to get you a win, like it did today.
Jon Lester was fantastic on a day the Cubs needed a nice long start. Each of Javy Baez and Willson Contreras stole runs today (Baez did so by literally stealing home), and the bullpen closed things out after Lester departed from seven strong innings.
That was a great all-around win in my book, especially when you consider how many guys got rest.
