Cubs Injury Updates: Bryant, Darvish, Edwards, Morrow (UPDATE)

Chicago Cubs

Some pre-game injury updates to pass along …

The good news is that Kris Bryant (shoulder) is feeling well enough to take more swings, and could come off the bench tonight:

The less good news is that a DL stint is still being held out as a possibility:

Speaking of Darvish in there, his rehab outing tonight went about as well as possible from the look/sound/box score of things. His velocity was fine, he threw all his pitches, threw 57 pitches (41 strikes), and went 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 ER (HR), 5 K, 0 BB. If he feels fine tomorrow, as Mark Gonzales’s tweet indicates, we could be looking at Darvish back in the rotation by this weekend.

At that point, it’ll be decision time for the rotation, but we already know Mike Montgomery isn’t going anywhere, and I don’t think the Cubs are ready to bounce Tyler Chatwood to the bullpen. So, I suspect it’d be time for a six-man rotation heading into the break.

Also, having some fun with the kids:

QUICK UPDATE on Darvish – we’ll have a more comprehensive look tomorrow, but it sounds like he was not as confident about how his triceps were feeling:

On the bullpen front, hopefully the Cubs can get back two of their most important arms within the week:

If Morrow (back) feels good throwing today, it’s possible he’ll be in line for an activation on Wednesday, when he’s eligible to come off of the disabled list.

As for Edwards (shoulder), we’ll see if he can throw a couple bullpen sessions this week and come back this weekend, or if he’ll thereafter need a short rehab assignment. Either way, if things go smoothly, it’s looking like he should be back by next week.
