Usually when we see a position player pitching, it is because the team making that move is way behind and doesn’t want to use up another arm in a game they probably can’t win, particularly after they have already used a lot of their bullpen.
Yesterday, in the Iowa game, we saw Iowa place catcher Ali Solis on the mound for the final inning while they were ahead. Why? Probably because their starter, Trevor Clifton, hadn’t gotten out of the third inning and they had already used three relievers out of a bullpen thinned by recent Chicago promotions. Still, it certainly isn’t a move you’re going to see very often.
Solis, if you’re wondering, gave up a run on two hits (including a homer), but got out the inning with the lead intact.

Other Notes
That’s right. Myrtle Beach’s Jhon Romero struck out the side, then came back out the next inning and struck out the side again. When Romero took the mound in the eighth, Buies Creek had already scored once, and had runners on the corners. Although he’s a pure relief prospect and is 23 in High-A, Romero has posted strikeout rates well over 30% the last couple years, so he’s worth noting.
Yesterday marked the fifth time this season Tyler Thomas has struck out seven or more batters in a game. His best total, eleven, came in his previous start. For the season Thomas has an ERA of 2.47 with 64 strikeouts in 62 innings.
On June 5, Andruw Monasterio went 0 for 4. That was the last time he played a game in which he did not reach base. His on base streak is up to 19 games, even after his hitting streak came to end at ten games yesterday.
Brennen Davis, the Cubs second round pick, left the Cubs 2 game after the second inning, but so far there is no confirmed word as to why.
