I mentioned this briefly earlier today, but Michael Fulmer, today’s Tiger starter, is one of the more impressive young starters in baseball. His numbers this season haven’t been as good as they were in 2016 and 2017, but considering that he’s coming back from elbow surgery, it’s not that bad either. Most importantly, don’t be surprised if, at times, he flashes the sort of stuff that looks far better than his 4.20 ERA and 4.04 FIP would make you think.
Of course, the Cubs have a similar story on the mound today, too. Kyle Hendricks has been one of the better pitches in baseball for a while now, but has had a rough go of it here in his last four or five starts. More specifically, his command has been off at times and that’s pretty destructive to his overall ability. So your hope today is that he’s figured something out and is back to his usual self.
If the Cubs win today, they’ll match their season-high in consecutive wins (5) and in games over .500 (13). A win will also help them keep pace with the first-place (barely) Brewers as we inch closer to the All-Star break and trade deadline. Timing is everything.
Let’s go, Cubs.
