Cubs Minor League Daily: Bryant Departs, Webb Debuts

Chicago Cubs

Tennessee’s brief visit from Kris Bryant was a hit for the Smokies. After packing the house with 7,613 fans on Monday night, another 5,698 fans turned up for a noon start on Tuesday.

I’ve been in that park a number of times, and once you cross the four thousand mark the stadium really starts to feel full. Packing 7600+ in that stadium, where the worst seats have you practically on top of the field, would make for a very loud, very intense atmosphere. And, honestly, nearly 5700 fans would make for a setting that isn’t too far behind.

Now that Bryant has left town, all the Smokies fans have to cheer for is a first place team. That’s not a bad consolation prize.

Triple A: Iowa Cubs

Other Notes

  • Brian Duensing pitching a scoreless inning for the Smokies. He allowed no hits, no walks, and struck out no one. Two of his outs came on the ground.
  • Kris Bryant only had two at bats as the DH. He finished 0 for 2 with a strikeout before being replaced by Ian Rice.
  • The Ryan Webb who pitched for AZL Cubs 1 last night is in fact that Ryan Webb, the veteran reliever who has tossed nearly four hundred career major league innings in relief while pitching for just about everyone over the past several years. He spent most of last season on the disabled list in the Giants organization and only pitched about twenty innings. It looks like he was signed by the Cubs in June, a year after the Giants released him (the transaction page says he was ‘assigned to the Chicago Cubs’), and last night was his Cubs’ debut. I suspect he’ll head to Iowa fairly quickly.
  • The Triple A All Star game is tonight. The Cubs are represented by their manager, Marty Peavy, and reliever Alberto Baldonado.
  • Overlooked in the Bryant madness in Tennessee – infielder Trent Giambrone was named the Southern League Player of the Week for last week. A lot of his offense last week came in the one game in which he homered three times. For the season, Giambrone is looking more and more like a future Major League utility infielder. He’s currently .266/.329/.489 with 14 homers and 21 steals. His wRC+ is now 127.
