Tuesday night, playing in Chicago, maligned Cardinals outfielder Dexter Fowler hit a grand slam. It had to feel really good after the last couple weeks, when he endured criticism from his own organization about his energy and his effort, all while out on paternity leave to welcome the arrival of his second child.
In the wake of those comments from team president John Mozeliak, Fowler’s former manager was asked about his energy and effort with the Cubs, and Joe Maddon had nothing but positive things to say about Fowler’s time with his team.
Fowler, it turns out, caught wind of those comments, and he was very appreciative, telling the Tribune, “It was awesome to see that. I thank him very much. It’s a breath of fresh air.”
Fowler also spoke with 670 The Score about the situation, and about his time with the Cubs, and he emphasized that, “Joe and Davey [Martinez] are different than any coaches I ever had. Obviously, they are a ton more laid-back. You do have to adapt to every situation.”
The Cardinals clubhouse is believed to be many things, but laid-back is not one of them. See, for example, today’s story about how Mike Matheny uses Bud Norris to police the other relievers. You can understand how it was probably a culture shock for Fowler (and, just sayin’: he played a whole lot better with the Cubs).
I don’t know how Fowler’s time with the Cardinals will end – there are still three more seasons on his sizable contract after this year – but it’s nice to see that he at least feels some support coming from the baseball world.
