Today the Chicago Cubs are playing two games against the St. Louis Cardinals. And here’s their lineup for game 1.
Chicago Cubs Lineup:
- Anthony Rizzo, 1B
- Ian Happ, CF
- Jason Heyward, RF
- Ben Zobrist, 2B
- Javy Baez, SS
- Kyle Schwarber, LF
- Victor Caratini, C
- Tommy La Stella, 3B
- Tyler Chatwood, P
When this lineup was shared by the @Cubs on Twitter just moments ago, a Cubs fan by the name of @MitchHenry just about brought me to tears (of laughter) with this tweet:
4 pitchers in the starting lineup?

Indeed, with Ian Happ, Victor Caratini, Tommy La Stella, and Tyler Chatwood all in the lineup, the Cubs are starting FOUR pitchers this afternoon! Joe Maddon has really lost it.
I kid, of course, and if you don’t get the joke: Each of those three position players took the mound for the Cubs yesterday when the Cardinals lucked into 18 runs.
In any case, yes, the Cubs are splitting the squad today, with two games on tap, and the game one lineup features the usual Cubs bench (Ben Zobrist, Ian Happ, Victor Caratini, Tommy La Stella) where Javy Baez, Albert Almora, Willson Contreras, and Kris Bryant would normally play.
Of course, that also added FOUR left-handed bats to the lineup, which, together with Jason Heyward, Anthony Rizzo, and Kyle Schwarber, means Javy Baez is the only righty in the lineup.
Luke Weaver’s L/R Splits:
Versus Lefties: .278/.353/.455 (.350 wOBA)
Versus Righties: .217/.281/.337 (.272 wOBA)
No explanation needed, right?
We’ll have your full Pre-Gamin’ later today closer to game time.
