See? Yesterday’s massive blowout, ridiculous loss was just one game. No impact going forward, other than the persistent hotness of Matt Carpenter (who homered for the fifth straight game).
The Cubs handled the Cardinals with relative ease today, seeing big days at the plate from Javy Baez, Anthony Rizzo, and Ben Zobrist. The Cardinals had pulled within a run in the top of the 7th, but a four-run bottom of the frame gave the Cubs plenty of breathing room.
On the pitching side of things, we may have to accept that today’s version of Tyler Chatwood is probably going to be the “good” version of Chatwood – difficult to do a lot of damage against, but he will put himself in peril repeatedly with his wildness. It’s the guy we saw early this year and lamented … but now I think it’s the guy we have to hope for. More on Chatwood later. You don’t see too many starts featuring six walks and just one hit, with that hit being a homer.
The Cubs’ newest reliever, Jesse Chavez, made his debut with two scoreless innings to finish out the game. Cool, cool. Keep doing that.
Another game tonight for the Cubs and Cardinals – how about a sweep?
